Forgotten Memory

People who were murdered, executed, victims of reprisal. People. With names and surnames.

A project to make it personal, to fight oblivion and, at the same time, to erase the forced anonymity that became suffering on two counts. An exercise in truth as a way of fostering empathy through proximity.

Hence this video, this story, this unifying thread. All of the people executed in Paterna with names and surnames. An invitation to increase knowledge, foster the future involvement of individuals and groups at both personal and institutional level.

The duty of memory. A society challenged by decades of evading responsibility, offending victims on two counts.

Families that resist and refuse to accept oblivion. They learned and suffered trauma from within the privacy of the family. During the dictatorship, even when prohibited, when forced to comply.

Decades of oblivion and lack of political involvement made the stigmatisation chronic, and the ritual of remembering a distant murmur. The objects bonding them to their relatives were a secret. Public awareness came late and institutionalisation started with ups and downs.

Families serve as guardians of memory, ensuring its survival and allowing history to be reconstructed today - from the ground up, through details, emotions, stories, and the act of remembrance.
